Dr. Jamie Marich Ph.D., LPCC-S, LICDC-CS, REAT, RYT-500, RMT | What does it mean to redefine therapy? (1.5 CE hour)

In 2015, Dr. Jamie Marich and her team launched a hashtag #RedefineTherapy which directly flowed from a chapter title in her book Dancing Mindfulness: A Complete Path to Healing and Transformation. Marich contended that even though she was proud to be a therapist, what she saw happening in clinical offices did not nearly excite her as much as what she saw happening in the realm of community advocacy, community care, and in well-delivered holistic modalities for healing and growth. Marich often says that as it relates to healing, it’s not enough to think outside the box, we must be willing to challenge existing paradigms and smash the boxes that do not work for people altogether. Known for keeping what works from tradition and honoring research, while also advocating for fresh ideas and a return to the indigenous roots of healing, Marich will challenge all of you to “redefine therapy” in this presentation. She will lead you in an honest inventory about what may still work about our helping professions and what may need to be radically changed, particularly if you are committed to anti-racism work and removing the stigma around mental health care.

After this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain and discuss the working tenants of the Redefine Therapy movement as birthed in the Dancing Mindfulness approach to expressive arts therapy
  2. Evaluate critically the elements of the existing helping professions that may work on a larger scale, and determine what might need a complete overhaul
  3. Integrate skillfully more holistic and healing arts modalities into clinical care, or at very least explore best practices for making appropriate referrals for clients
  4. Implement the “self-care” and self-nourishing strategies inherent in the Redefine Therapy movement to one’s own life, and explain how such implementation can directly impact quality of services that clients receive
