What is the therapist’s role when people in the news are showing behaviors or making statements that possibly indicate a mental health condition? This course explores the history of mental health professionals’ roles, duties, and controversies surrounding making statements about people that they have never seen as clients and how the ethical rules were created, applied, and misinterpreted from the original authors to the professional organizations today.
In this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the foundations and history of the American Psychiatric Association’s Goldwater principle
- Distinguish between commentary about diagnostics and descriptions of behavior
- Differentiate between appropriate and inappropriate statements according to today’s professional association’s ethical codes
