Suicide rates have been increasing across the nation and there is an increasing need for the mental health workforce to be prepared to assess and intervene with clients of all ages. This workshop takes an in-depth look at the risk and protective factors associated with suicidal idealogy and behaviors in both teens and adults. It also lays the beginning foundations of a suicide model to help clinicians better understand and intervene with clients exhibiting suicidal thoughts.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe four preventive factors for suicide
  2. Identify four risk factors for suicide
  3. Identify and describe the role of entrapment in the suicide continuum

Curt Widhalm, LMFT

Curt Widhalm is in private practice in the Los Angeles area. He is the cofounder of the Therapy Reimagined conference, an Adjunct Professor at Pepperdine University and CSUN, a former Subject Matter Expert for the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, former CFO of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, and a loving husband and father. He is 1/2 great person, 1/2 provocateur, and 1/2 geek, in that order. He dabbles in the dark art of making “dad jokes” and usually has a half-empty cup of coffee somewhere nearby.
